Bio (short)
I am interested in sound and music and have enjoyed making rock, folk, ambient and electronic music for dance and theatre using software, synthesisers and guitars.
For example, I have written music for dance and physical theatre productions including the score to a dance and physical theatre (Earthall, 2015) show that won a ‘Best Dance Production’ award at the Wales Theatre Awards (2016).
I have continued to be interested in combining electronic and acoustic sound worlds in collaboration with other artists, visuals and movements - making audio visual work with movement, self-written software, synths, guitar, animations, short films and game engines.
I would like to share this interest with others by collaborating on new audio visual experiences and contributing sounds and music to new theatre, dance, sound art and video game productions.
Bio (medium)
I am an electronic musician and self-taught guitarist who enjoys making music in folk, rock, blues, ambient and electronic styles.
For example, I have written and performed rock, folk, electronic and ambient music inspired music for dance and physical theatre production both on guitar and with electronic sounds for the National Dance Company of Wales (2021-2022) and Earthfall dance company (2014-2015).
I composed original music in collaboration with one other musician for the show ‘Stories from a Crowded Room’ (Earthfall 2015) and this production went on to win a ‘Best Dance Production’ award at the Wales Theatre Awards (2016).
In addition to this I’ve noticed that several film and game scores that I enjoy use sound and music to suggest, highlight or reinforce a dramatic narrative - adding to, and reshaping the experience.
In response to this, I have continued to explore ways to apply sounds as part of a narrative or ambience, undertaking a traineeship in media composition at Conservatorio ‘Francesco Venezze’, Rovigo (2019) and writing short film scores for two low budget independent films shown aired on BBC iPlayer (2019), S4c (2019) and BBC Two (2021). I also completed an MSc in ‘Digital Composition and Performance’ at the University of Edinburgh (2018) and more recently I have been making music with electronics, guitar and orchestral instruments towards an MMus at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Collaborating with others to make an engaging experience with visuals, movements and sounds has helped me to make a range of projects.
I look forward to collaborating with dancers, film makers, game designers, visual artists, musicians, animators and audiences to share my interest in adding to experiences with sounds.
Bio (long)
I am an electronic musician and self-taught guitarist who enjoys making music in folk, rock, blues, ambient and electronic styles.
For example, I have written rock, folk, electronic and ambient music inspired music for dance and physical theatre productions put on by the National Dance Company of Wales (2021-2022) and Earthfall dance company (2014-2015). I also completed a B.A.(Hons) ‘Creative Sound and Music’ degree at the University of South Wales (2015), where I practiced writing songs, making sound installations with MAX MSP and thinking about how I could make engaging music with a computer and guitar in response to music and philosophy texts by Deleuze, Manovich, Pepperell and Attali.
I composed original music in collaboration with one other musician for the show ‘Stories from a Crowded Room’ (Earthfall, 2015) and this production went on to win a ‘Best Dance Production’ award at the Wales Theatre Awards (2016).
I also took an interest in using electronic sounds to make music and went on to complete an MSc in ‘Digital Composition and Performance’, generative algorithmic music composition with self-written software, at the University of Edinburgh (2018).
While there, I noticed that I found music particularly engaging where it suggested a dramatic narrative, cultural association or mood. Several film and game scores that I was moved by used sound and music to suggest, highlight or reinforce a dramatic narrative - altering the experience of watching a film or playing a video game.
This has seemed to be a worth while way to engage with an audience as part of music that I would like to write.
In response to this, I have continued to explore ways to apply sounds to screen and movements to suggest a mood, narrative or ambience. I travelled to Italy as part of the Erasmus+ scheme to take part in a traineeship in media composition at Conservatorio ‘Francesco Venezze’, Rovigo (2019) where I practiced making, recording and conducting music for orchestra to a set of film cues. After this, I returned to Wales and was invited to make music for two low budget short films. These were aired on BBC iPlayer (2019), S4c (2019) and BBC Two (2021). I have also applied for and been lucky to receive Arts Council of Wales funding to research ways to make music with dance and live software using web camera triggered sounds, live guitar and and MAX MSP (2019) - helping both a musician and dancer to swap roles during a live jam. Beyond this, I have been invited to make camera triggered audio-visual sound art as part of a public exhibition about play at the Cardiff based arts centre G39 (2022). Currently, I am studying towards an MMus in Electronic Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I am continuing to make music with MAX MSP as well as to get guidance about making music with orchestral instruments, electronic sounds, animations, films and video games.
Collaborating with others has helped me to make engaging experiences with visuals, movements and sounds.
I look forward to collaborating with dancers, film makers, game designers, visual artists, musicians, animators and audiences to share my interest in sound as part of new projects.
